Dogs have been at the side of the human for centuries, helping them expand and grow as a culture and civilization. Today it is hard to imagine the American Dream without one running around the yard. It has been thousands of years and still the dog has not lost even a little bit of popularity.

Dogs have been an intricate part of human society since the ancient era. It is believed that they were used as sled animals when North America first became populated nearly 12,000 years ago. They also assisted many other cultures migrations throughout history. They can be found on pottery and as statues dated back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Why would these ancient cultures be so interested in keeping the descendants of wolves around?

The dog has had many roles to play throughout history, many of which have carried into modern society. They were kept with groups of people who migrated for a myriad of reasons. Their acute sense of hearing and smell allows them to be early detectors of any threat present. This is represented today for the common guard dog. As much of a pain it is to be woken up from a deep sleep to a canine’s bark, it is easy to be thankful when they thwart a potential dangerous thief.

A very practical reason in the past was to use the dogs as warmth. Today, this has become a treat to both the pet and the owner, as snuggling will quickly become a favorite past time for both the dog and the owner.

Hunting has been a staple for human survival since the stick was first fashioned into a spear. Man’s best friend has been at the humans side since then to assists in the hunt, using natural instincts to track and recover the animals. Today the sport of hunting would not be successful without the dog. They are used the same way as centuries ago, able to bring back a kill quickly, cleanly and intact.

The dog is a big investment at first, but the payoffs in the long run greatly outweigh the costs. Since the beginning of the dogs existence, they have assisted human kind to grow and thrive, and all they ask for in the end is that love be returned.
